Pooper:
Derek kills John and then accepts the position of CEO. He does so only long enough to sign the paperwork releasing the eviction against Melanie, and then quits. Due to the virus, nobody is held liable for their actions. Derek and Melanie are shown still happily together.

Long Ending:
Derek (Steven Yeun) is a mid-level attorney at a large law firm run by CEO John Towers (Steven Brand). Derek rose to prominence at his firm by successfully defending a client named Nevil Reed from a murder charge. Nevil murdered a coworker while infected by a new virus named ID-7. This virus causes infected people’s ids (i.e., their most selfish desires) to take over, causing the infected to engage in acts of violence and debauchery. Derek successfully argued that those who are infected by the virus (which is indicated by the infected having bloodshot eyes) are legally incapable of controlling themselves and can’t be held responsible for their actions while sick.

In his time working for the firm, Derek went from an idealistic and dependable young man to a cutthroat and jaded workaholic, just like most of his colleagues. He blows off his sister’s birthday and bullies the opposing parties in his cases. One particular morning, he refuses to help a woman named Melanie (Samara Weaving) when she shows up to beg for his client not to evict her. When she refuses to leave, he reports her to the firm’s security team. Later, Derek learns that a high-level attorney named Kara (Caroline Chikezie) is planning to make him the fall guy for messing up a case she is in charge of. Kara and Derek are allowed up to John’s office (which can only be accessed via an elevator that requires a key card and access code) to discuss what happened. Despite knowing Derek is not to blame, John ultimately side with Kara and orders the head of Human Resources – Lester (Dallas Roberts) – to unceremoniously fire Derek.

As he’s being escorted out, Derek learns that the law office has been quarantined due to an outbreak of ID-7. The government is pumping a gas into the building to neutralize the virus, but it will take 8 hours to take effect. Within minutes, everyone in the building is infected. Derek is tortured by security before being thrown into a room with Melanie, who was also trapped inside by the quarantine. After a brief fight, the pair agree to work together to make it up to John’s office and demand what they want (Derek’s job back and Melanie’s foreclosure to be lifted). They manage to kill Lester and take his key card, which gives them access to the floor where Kara works (and Kara has a key card to John’s office). Derek also calls the firm’s largest client and exposes plots the firm engaged in to pursue their interests instead of the client’s, causing the client to terminate the firm’s services. Enraged by Derek’s actions (and knowing Derek is coming for him), John offers to pay almost half a million to anyone who kills Derek. He also offers to make Kara partner if she destroys her key card (she agrees to the deal but orders her assistant to hide it in case she needs it as leverage).

Melanie and Derek make their way to Kara, but though Kara eventually offers them the card in exchange for her life, they learn that the assistant destroyed the key card (suspecting Kara would betray him, John offered a separate deal to the assistant to destroy it). After the assistant kills Kara, Derek apologizes to Melanie and explains that John (or any of the partners) could easily sign paperwork that would end the foreclosure permanently due to various defects in their client’s paperwork. He also expresses regret at how he let the firm change him. The two then have sex, and Derek asks Melanie on a date if they survive. The pair eventually come up with a plan to access John’s floor.

With the help of the firm’s IT guy, they steal all of the files of one of the partners (the one who initiated the foreclosure against Melanie) and offer to exchange it for her key card and access code. The partner works with the head of security to set up an ambush for the pair, but Derek and Melanie manage to get the upper hand and kill them both. Derek uses the key card and the access code to make it to John’s office. John tries to stop Derek by offering to make him a partner, but Derek declines. The pair fight, and, with the approval of the other partners, Derek throws John off of the stairwell, where he plummets to his death. The partners then offer to make Derek the new CEO.

Derek narrates that he accepted the offer, but only so that he’d have the authority to sign the paperwork terminating Melanie’s home foreclosure. Derek then resigns, and he and Melanie leave hand-in-hand when the quarantine is lifted. Nobody is held accountable for their actions while infected, but the mayhem caused by the mass infection finally motivates the government to complete a vaccine for ID-7. Derek is then shown happily pursuing one of his pre-law firm passions, painting, alongside Melanie.

Order of Deaths:

  1. Nevil’s coworker – Nevil repeatedly stabs him with a pen in the throat
  2. Ewan – Derek’s only friend at the firm, Ewan tries to stop security from beating Derek up during the quarantine. A security guard shoves Ewan against a board with an exposed nail. The nail penetrates Ewan’s skull and kills him. John later pees on Ewan’s body to taunt Derek.
  3. Lester – After Lester incapacitates Derek by stabbing his hand to a desk with a pair of scissors, he attacks Melanie. She grabs a handheld circular saw and cuts open his chest with it. Derek later sets Lester’s body on fire and sends a video of it to John and Kara.
  4. Kara’s underlings – Five employees agree to protect Kara from Derek and Melanie. During a brutal fight, the five are beaten to death by Kara and Derek, who use a hammer, wrench, fire extinguisher, and their own fists and feet to kill them.
  5. Kara – Kara’s assistant uses a pair of scissors to kill Kara offscreen once Kara betrays John. Melanie and Derek are later shown to have cut out Kara’s tongue (to get revenge because Kara was a consistent liar).
  6. Head of Security – Derek stabs him in the head with a screwdriver during a brutal fight.
  7. Partner – The partner who issued the foreclosure against Melanie is killed when Melanie bashes her head in with a hammer.
  8. John Towers – Derek bests John in a fight. After the rest of the partners vote for John’s “termination,” Derek throws him over a railing where he falls many stories to his death.
