Stella (Barbara Stanwyck) provides for her daughter Laurel’s (Anne Shirley) societal success by granting her father a divorce so he could marry a woman of his own class, and then convincing Laurel that she is better off living with her dad even though she had to trick Laurel into thinking her mother didn’t want her around anymore. Laurel marries an upper-class boy while Stella watches from the street, happy that her daughter can have the life she always wanted for herself.
