Bobby’s (Tim O’Kelly’s) shooting spree takes him to the drive-in theater where Byron Orlock (Boris Karloff) is scheduled to make his final public appearance. When Bobby shoots Jenny (Nancy Hsueh) in the shoulder, Orlock is spurred to action. An already-confused Bobby becomes completely dumbfounded when he sees one Orlock (the character on the screen) approaching from behind, and another (the live one) advancing from the front. He shoots, but his bullet only grazes Orlock’s temple. When Orlock reaches Bobby, a series of well-placed slaps reduces the formerly frightening sniper to a sobbing lump. The police arrive and Orlock departs, stating explicitly what what was hinted at earlier: he is retiring because real-life terrors like Bobby have become more horrible than any of the “monsters” that he portrayed in the movies.
