Believing that James Sutter ghost is haunting the house. Avery (Corey Hawkins) starts to bless the house, particularly the piano (which has engravings carved by enslaved ancestor). Berniece Charles (Danielle Deadwyler) finally overcomes her fear to play the piano which exercises the spirit of Sutter.

Boy Willie Charles (John David Washington) then decides not to get back the piano in order to buy the land that Sutter had.

The exact manner of James Sutter’s death (whether it be natural, accidental or murder) is left to the viewer.
