Musical adaptation of the play – loosely based on T.H. White’s The Once and Future King
King Arthur (Richard Harris) marries Guenevere (Vanessa Redgrave). Lancelot (Franco Nero) arrives at Camelot when The Round Table is formed.
Playing on the other Knights’ envy of Lancelot, Guenevere creates an event where three Round Table Knights joust Lancelot. Lancelot defeats all three Knights, but in so doing, mortally wounds Sir Dinadan (Anthony Rogers). Lancelot miraculously heals him, and Guenevere falls in love with Lancelot.
Mordred (David Hemmings – yes the one from Gladiator) comes to Camelot and hatches a plot to catch Guenevere and Lancelot together. The plot works, but Lancelot is able to flee. Guenevere is sentenced to burn at the stake, but Lancelot arrives in the nick of time and carries her away.
The film is bookended by the impending battle between Mordred and Arthur for Camelot. At the end of the film, Guenevere (now a nun) and Lancelot visit Arthur on the battlefield. After they say their farewells, Arthur meets an idealistic young boy named Tom (Gary Marshal) who renews Arthur’s faith in the future. Arthur knights Tom and orders him to watch the battle in order to pass down the tale to future generations.
