Satsuki and Mei’s father is abruptly called away to attend to their ill mother. The sisters are so anxious about what might be wrong that Mei runs away to try and find the hospital. Satsuki calls on the Totoros for help, and they summon a remarkable cat/bus creature to take her directly to Mei. Once reunited, the sisters are taken to the hospital, and looking through the window into their mom’s room, are relieved to discover she’s okay (she merely had a cold). Leaving an ear of corn on the windowsill as a gift for her, they return home, quietly observed from afar by the Totoros.
