Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) is now a famous supernatural talk show host, using her paranormal abilities to speak to other ghosts. However, the job has put a strain on her relationship with her teenage daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega). Lydia is also still haunted by nightmares and visions of Betelgeuse. After Lydia’s father Charles dies in a shark attack, Lydia and Astrid return to Winter River with Lydia’s stepmother Delia (Catherine O’Hara), along with Lydia’s manager/boyfriend Rory (Justin Theroux), who proposes to her after Charles’s funeral.

Down in the afterlife, Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton) is being hunted by his ex-wife, Delores (Monica Bellucci), formerly the leader of a soul-sucking cult. She poisoned Betelgeuse after their marriage, but he killed her with an axe before he died. A ghost detective named Wolf Jackson (Willem Dafoe) is also trying to prevent Delores from taking the souls of other ghosts. With Lydia back in town, the Ghost With The Most sees this as an opportunity to come back to the living world.

Astrid befriends a boy in town named Jeremy (Arthur Conti), who is revealed to be a ghost. He wants Astrid’s help in coming back to life, but Lydia finds out that Jeremy murdered his parents before he accidentally died. Jeremy tricks Astrid into giving up her life for his, forcing Lydia to seek help from Betelgeuse. He agrees to save Astrid on the condition that Lydia marries him. Meanwhile, Delia ends up dead because she was performing a ritual for Charles involving snakes that bit her.

Betelgeuse prevents Jeremy from reviving by dropping him down to Hell. Lydia and Astrid briefly reunite with Astrid’s father Richard in the afterlife before they return to the living world for Lydia’s wedding. Betelgeuse shows up with Delia to stop the wedding after getting Rory to reveal that he never loved or supported Lydia and just wanted her money. She responds by punching him across the room. Betelgeuse proceeds to try and marry Lydia, only for Delores to arrive. Astrid manages to get the Sandworm to show up, which eats Rory and Delores. Astrid also finds a loophole that prevents the wedding from going through and sends Betelgeuse back to the afterlife.

Delia goes back to the afterlife where she reunites with Charles (or what’s left of him). Lydia decides to quit her show to spend more time with Astrid, but after several nightmares, it is clear that she is still not quite rid of Betelgeuse.
