After a failed attempt on his life, Frank Costello (Robert DeNiro) wants to retire and hand the reins over to his hot-headed former friend Vito Genovese (Robert DeNiro). However, the violent, paranoid Vito will never accept that Frank will just leave and continues to cause havoc. After Vito has Frank’s appointed successor Albert Anastasia (Michael Rispoli) murdered, Frank realizes the only way he and his wife will be safe is to bring it all down.

Frank sets up a nationwide commission meeting obstinately to anoint Vito as the successor. However, he calls in an anonymous tip to the local police who surveil the meeting and causes the other bosses to panic and drive off. More police backup to arrive and take down the information of every car, including Vito’s. Frank, who purposely delayed arriving, avoids the police blockade.

The ensuing information gathered confirms that the mafia is a nationwide enterprise, leading to arrests, convictions and prison sentences for many bosses. Vito is eventually arrested and given 15 years, which becomes a life sentence as he dies in prison. Frank’s would-be assassin became a boss himself and spent years pretending to be crazy, only to finally be convicted and die in prison. Frank Costello died February 18, 1973, peacefully with his beloved wife Bobbie (Debra Messing) at his side.
