After Tom (Adrian Pasdar) dies under mysterious circumstances, struggling actor Anthony Miller (Russell Crowe) is offered his part, a chance to reignite his career. Taking his estranged daughter with him to set, Miller initially does well but his inability at times to remember lines and other strange behaviors cause him to be fired and recast with Joe (Sam Worthington), his fellow costar. However, when Joe is horrifically killed by a demonic apparition of Anthony, the film is ultimately cancelled.

Anthony’s daughter, Lee (Ryan Simpkins) initially believes that her father’s actions are due to slipping back into alcoholism but comes to understand that he may actually be possessed. After consulting with the film’s priest consultant, Father Conor (David Hyde Pierce), they attempt an exorcism of Anthony. When the process appears futile, Conor offers himself as a sacrificial vessel. Anthony comes back to his senses, he and his daughter complete the ritual, causing the demon to be defeated unfortunately at the cost of Father Conor’s life.

At the end of the film, Anthony and Lee’s relationship grows stronger and Lee begins writing a screenplay for her father to star in.
