James Hart’s best friend Kevin (James Naughton) drops out of Harvard Law School, unable to cope with the pressure.

Hart (Timothy Bottoms) sticks it out, and with the help of his girlfriend Susan (Lindsay Wagner), the daughter of snooty Professor Charles Kingsfield (John Houseman), learns to lighten up and not take life or school too seriously.

After sweating out the semester and taking his final exams, Hart receives an envelope containing his final grades. With a new, happier attitude, he throws away the envelope like a paper airplane, without even opening it, and runs off to frolic on the beach with Susan.
