What’s Eating Gilbert Grape(1993)

Gilbert’s (Johnny Depp) terribly obese mother Bonnie (Darlene Cates) dies of what appears to be heart failure during his younger brother Arnie’s (Leonardo DiCaprio) birthday party. Unwilling to have their mother become the joke of the town through having her corpse lifted out of the house by a crane, Gilbert, Arnie, and their sisters Amy (Laura Harrington) and Ellen (Mary Kate Schellhardt) take all of the furniture out of the house and then set the house on fire to cremate her.

Nearly a year later, Gilbert says in a voiceover that Amy got a job offer to manage a bakery in Des Moines, and Ellen switched schools to go to Des Moines with her. Gilbert and Arnie meet up with Gilbert’s love Becky (Juliette Lewis) and her grandmother and travel the U.S. with them.
