Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan) proves that the testimony that implicated Walter McMillan (Jamie Foxx) was falsified, but the court still upholds Walter’s sentence and denies him a retrial. Regardless, Bryan appeals the decision to the Alabama Supreme Court while also presenting Walter’s case on “60 Minutes” to turn public opinion in Walter’s favor.
The Alabama D.A., Tommy Chapman (Rafe Spall), is angered at his portrayal in the documentary and tries to reopen the investigation into Walter’s case to prove that he did commit murder. Bryan tells Chapman that he will motion to dismiss all of Walter’s charges in court, while also calling him out for denying justice to Walter. Bryan’s words seem to affect Chapman and when Bryan makes his motion to the court, Chapman breaks with his team and agrees to dismiss Walter’s charges, finally freeing Walter from Death Row.
Bryan and Walter remained close friends until Walter’s death in 2013. Bryan’s Equal Justice Initiative has freed 140 wrongfully convicted Death Row prisoners, including Ray Hinton, one of Walter’s cellmates. The racist sheriff who arrested Walter was reelected six times after Walter’s release, even after an investigation proved that Walter was innocent.
