The Miami Sharks are a football team that’s in chaos as it enters the playoffs and is trailing in the first half of the first playoff game. After veteran quarterback Cap Rooney (Dennis Quaid) is injured scoring a touchdown just before halftime, cocky back-up QB Steamin’ Willie Beamen (Jamie Foxx) leads the Miami Sharks to a 37-35 first-round playoff victory over the Dallas Knights (with Cap calling in the plays from the sidelines) by leaping over the pile at the goaline to score the winning touchdown on the last play of the game. Beleaguered head coach Tony D’Amato (Al Pacino) is rejuvenated by the victory and the friendship that has developed between himself and Willie.
We learn at a press conference over the end credits that the Sharks lose the next playoff game 24-13 to San Francisco, that Tony is quitting his head coaching job at Miami and taking over a new expansion franchise in Albuquerque, New Mexico because he’s getting full management control. He also signs Willie as his star quarterback and franchise player much to the chagrin of overbearing Sharks’ owner Christina Pagniacci (Cameron Diaz).
(Note: With five football games and the uncensored depiction of the antics of the players and coaches, this movie is a must for football fans, but may leave non-fans cold)
