Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) served in the Army but never handled a weapon. Despite the scrutiny and near-suspension he receives, he is allowed to maintain his right to refuse guns and to continue to serve as a medic in the field.

He rescued over 75 men in battle and was the first conscientious objector to be awarded the Medal of Honor.
